VelaBallroom
The Vela Ballroom dance floor in Miami during an evening class

Miami · Social dance studio

Learn to dance like the floor is yours.

Salsa, bachata, tango and wedding first dances. Group classes, private lessons, and a social night every Friday where you use what you just learned.

Why Vela

A room that makes the first class the easy part.

Most people put off dancing because the first night feels exposing. Vela is set up so it is not: clear counts, small progressions, and a floor full of people who walked in exactly as new as you.

Built for absolute beginners

You do not need a partner, a background in dance, or anything but flat shoes. Group classes start from the first step and stay friendly the whole way through.

Learn it, then actually use it

Classes teach the patterns. Friday social nights are where they turn into dancing, on the same floor, with the same people you learned beside.

Four styles, one studio

Salsa, bachata, tango and wedding first dances under one roof, so you can follow whichever music keeps pulling you back.

Flat shoes on day one. Heels and dance sneakers whenever you feel like it.

What we teach

Four styles. Two ways to learn them.

Group classes for the social floor, private lessons when you want the fastest route to a specific thing. Plenty of people do both.

Salsa

1 2 3 · 5 6 7

Fast, bright and endlessly social. Turn patterns, leading and following, and the timing that makes the rest of it click.

  • Group classes
  • Private lessons

Bachata

1 2 3 tap

The easiest music to start on. Close connection, body movement and a step you can take onto any floor in Miami.

  • Group classes
  • Private lessons

Tango

walk · walk · pause

Posture, weight and intention. Slower to learn and the most satisfying once the walk starts feeling like one movement.

  • Group classes
  • Private lessons

First dance

your song

Choreographed around the song you already chose, and around what the two of you can genuinely pull off on the night.

  • Private lessons
  • Couples

Every Friday

Social night is the reason the classes stick.

One night a week the studio becomes a social floor. No counting out loud, no rows, no routine to remember. Just the music, the room and everyone who has been learning alongside you.

  • Open to everyone taking classes at the studio, on your own or with someone.
  • Salsa and bachata through the night, with tango sets on the floor too.
  • The lowest-pressure way to try the thing you practiced on Tuesday.

Wedding first dances

Your song, choreographed to what you two can really do.

Private lessons for couples, built around the track you already picked. We shape it to your comfort level, your dress, your floor and how much time is left before the day.

How a first dance comes together
  1. 01
    Bring the song
We listen to it together and find the moments worth building the dance around.
  2. 02
    Learn the frame
Posture, connection and the basic step, so the choreography has something to sit on.
  3. 03
    Shape the routine
Entrance, the middle, and a finish that works in the shoes and the outfit you will wear.
  4. 04
    Run it for real
Practice at full speed until it feels like yours and not like homework.

Wedding coming up? Start with a trial lesson and we will tell you honestly what is possible in the time you have.

Questions

The things people ask before the first class.

Do I need a partner?

No. Group classes are built so you can come on your own, and we rotate partners through the room. Couples are just as welcome.

I have never danced at all. Is that a problem?

It is the most common way people arrive. Beginner group classes start from the basic step and the count, with no assumed background.

What should I wear to a trial class?

Comfortable clothes you can move in and flat shoes with a smooth sole. Dance shoes are something you can think about much later.

Group class or private lesson?

Group classes are the social route: you meet people and learn to dance with a room. Private lessons are the direct route when you have a specific goal, like a wedding first dance.

Which style should I start with?

Bachata is the gentlest start, salsa is the most social, and tango rewards patience. Tell us the music you like and we will point you at the right class.

Can we book lessons just for our wedding?

Yes. First dance work is done as private lessons for the two of you, choreographed around your song.
